VIAVI makes the MicroNIR range of miniature near-infrared spectrometers, built on linear variable filter optics originally developed for NASA spacecraft. They move raw material identification and process monitoring out of the QC lab and onto the loading dock or the line, as handheld or in-process PAT instruments.
The line splits by where the instrument sits. MicroNIR OnSite-W is a wireless handheld unit with one-button operation and a battery rated for days or weeks between charges, built for loading-dock use. MicroNIR PAT-U is a stainless steel in-process monitor powered over a single USB cable, with optional mounting flanges. MicroNIR PAT-W is a wireless version that attaches to rotating equipment.
VIAVI names four application points: raw material identification at the receiving dock with OnSite-W; granulation and drying on fluid bed dryers, granulators, and high-shear mixers with PAT-U; blend monitoring on tumble blenders with PAT-W; and tableting, with either unit mounted on the press chute or feed frame. The instruments are used by pharmaceutical manufacturers, CDMOs, and nutraceutical producers implementing PAT and continuous manufacturing.
