Uhlmann Packaging Systems

Uhlmann has packaged pharmaceuticals into blisters, bottles, and cartons since 1948, from Laupheim in Germany. Its blister machines run from the entry-level B 200 for small batches up to the B 1880 at 1,300 blisters a minute, and the BLU 400 handles secondary packaging for ampoules, syringes, vials, and cartridges.

The company sells lines rather than machines, covering packaging design, project management, installation, service, and the digital layer above, and works with international pharmaceutical companies, generics manufacturers, and contract packagers through 17 companies and more than 40 agencies. Three areas dominate its current development work.

Traceability, where serialization and aggregation have to satisfy track-and-trace rules across markets; parenteral packaging, where secondary packaging of syringes and vials demands gentler handling than tablets; and recyclable packaging design. Uhlmann employs around 1,700 people.
