IMA was founded near Bologna in 1961 and designs processing and packaging equipment for the pharmaceutical and other regulated industries. In North America, its Leominster, Massachusetts facility focuses on pharmaceutical packaging, including tablet and capsule counting, bottle filling, and integrated packaging lines, while its Thomas Processing operation in Elgin, Illinois specializes in solid dosage processing and tablet coating systems.

The group's pharmaceutical catalog is wide: granulation, tableting, coating, capsule filling, aseptic processing, freeze-drying, blister and bottle packaging, cartoning, labeling, stick pack and sachet filling, tube filling, suppository and ovule form-fill-seal, washing, and process analytical technology.

IMA sells integrated lines built from those pieces rather than single machines, on the argument that one supplier taking responsibility for the whole line removes the interface risk between vendors. It also builds continuous manufacturing systems, and works well beyond pharmaceuticals in food, coffee, tea, personal care, and tissue.
